Maintaining Hardwood Floors

Most professionally installed hardwood floors only require only simple care. Just sweep, dust or  vacuum regularly. Always follow the hardwood floors manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations. When you want to re-shine you need to re-coat with a hardwood floor wax. Never wax a surface-finished floor, and never use vinyl or tile floor care products on any wood floor.

Maintaining Wax Or Stained Hardwood Floors

Always dust or vacuum regularly, and use a buffing machine to maintain a great looking shine. Always follow the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations. If buffing no longer restores shine, you may need to re-coat with a small amount of hardwood floor wax. If so, throughly clean the hardwood floor with a recommended hardwood floor cleaner.  Then apply a liquid wax specifically for wood floors. Apply the hardwood floor wax evenly, allow the floor to dry, and buff to the desired shine. Depending on traffic, a properly maintained wood floor should need waxing once a year. Warning: Do not over wax. Always try buffing instead to avoid wax buildup. Apply  wax half as often in the non traffic areas of the hardwood floors such as under furniture and in corner and closets.

Cleaning Wax finish

To clean a wax finish use a combination liquid cleaner/ and wax made for hardwood floor cleaning. Do not use any water based hardwood floor cleaners.   When done wipe the hardwood floor clean with a microfiber dust mop. Let dry. Then buff to your desired shine.

Only Use Specific Hardwood Floor Cleaners

Do not EVER use linoleum or tile floor cleaning products on hardwood floors. Never use acrylic waxes on wood floors. These waxes cause wood to become slippery and dull. Using these products will result in the floors needing to be re-sanded and refinished.

Wet Mopping

Never wet mop a waxed hardwood floor. When cleaning a waxed hardwood floor, follow the manufacturer’s directions. Standing water can dull the hardwood floor finish, damage the hardwood , and leave a discoloring residue. If water spills on a wood floor, immediately wipe it up with a clean microfiber cloth.

Preventing Scratches On Hardwood Flooring

Place mats and throw rugs at doorways. Place furniture pads under furniture legs. Vacuum and dust your hardwood floors regularly.
