One of the benefits to homeowners that came out of the "Fiscal Cliff' discussion at the beginning of the year was the renewals of the energy tax credits to homeowners. Basically, if you have not used any energy tax credits since 2005, you are eligible for energy tax credits up to $500. This credit can be used for windows, insulation, and heating/cooling systems. For most qualifying heating and air conditioning system upgrades, you are looking at $300 per system with a maximum energy credit of$500. While there are several criteria to receiving the tax credits, the basics are as follows-----Package systems must have a SEER of at least 14. Split heat pump systems must have a SEER of at least 15. Split systems with gas heat/straight air must have a SEER of 16. As of now, this energy tax credit will end at the end of this year unless renewed by Congress.
