Leonard J. Elter Jr was a farm boy from western Pennsylvania. During the depression and post depression era at age 18 he went into the army. After basic training he was sent to Korea. After 4 years in the military he worked his way through college, with the help of a GI bill and door to door sales of Encyclopedias, he became a high school teacher at Calvert High. Mr. Elter loved the Gravely tractor so much that he decided to go into business selling them, as a result during his time of teaching Mr. Elter opened doors to L.J. Elter and Son in Huntingtown, MD in 1978. Many years later he retired from his teaching career in 1991 and went full time into building his outdoor power equipment center.
