Shade tree vs. Turf grass: The battle begins just after you purchase your new home with two twiggy trees and freshly laid sod in the front yard. Early in the fight, turf grass rages, throwing up low blows with a vigorous root system hogging water and nutrients. But with passing years, twiggy trees begin to spread, laughing at their lowly opponent, and using shade as their weapon, they begin to take the lead. The final knock out punch happens around year 7 when turfgrass throws in the white flag and falls face-first onto the mat.
